Mixing and diophantine problems

A short overview of the connection between
certain mixing problems in ergodic theory and two
different areas of Diophantine analysis. In the
connected case, the S-unit theorem of Schlickewei
et al. solves the problem. In the disconnected
case, exponential Diophantine problems over finite
fields arise, and here recent progress has been made
by Masser.
