Information and Communication Technology that Works for Experts of the Future

This session marks a new beginning for the MSc in Business Information Systems (BIS) programme - with the addition of ColLab - the state-of-the-art technology-enhanced learning facility situated in Moore Annex.

ColLab offers high resolution plasma displays, document and video cameras, DVD and VHS players and recorders, SmartBoard, tablet and other interactive surfaces, as well as super-quality video-conferencing with recording and archiving capabilities.

Designed to support teamwork, ColLab will enable the BIS students to actively engage in joint projects with colleagues on and off-campus. Using this technology they can share documents and archives, jointly author project reports and arrange ad hoc meetings in the virtual project space. This will give them a unique opportunity not only to use the tools but also to work on real-life solutions with our external partners from industry and public sector organisations.

This year MSc BIS students will pioneer teamwork in the ColLab and in the New Year 2007 the ColLab will be available as a resource for all RHUL staff and students who are interested in using its facilities in their own teaching and learning.

ColLab represents a major outcome of multi-disciplinary research in Information, Computing and Communication studies at RHUL that underpins the teaching content on the MSc BIS. This research has been commended for quality and innovation, and recommended for development in the RAE 2001.

On behalf of the BIS team (Dave Cohen, Simon Foley, Ashok Jashapara, Duska Rosenberg and Kostas Stathis) many thanks to HEFCE for the funds, Arup Communications (Graham Naylor-Smith) and Dolmen Technologies (Ian Shanahan) for design and implementation, and our own Stephen Johnson (AV), Nigel Rata and Owen Stephens (Computer Centre) for tailoring the technology to our requirements, and to Sarah Gerrard (Information Services) for guiding us all towards success.

For details, please contact Prof. D Rosenberg x 4162 (d.rosenberg@rhul.ac.uk) and visit the BIS website (http://www.cs.rhul.ac.uk/Internal/Computers/BIS/index.html) for regular updates during the Autumn Term.
