PATTERNS IN DATA: FROM PLANETS TO GENES
INAUGURAL LECTURE
Professor John Shawe-Taylor, Department of Computer Science, Royal Holloway, University of London
Abstract: The problem of pattern recognition is introduced in the historical context of the discovery of the laws of planetary motion. The advent of computers has enabled data to be accumulated and processed in far greater quantities, so throwing down a challenge to analysts to identify significant and useful patterns. The talk will give an introduction to some of the recent advances in our understanding of automatic pattern recognition and will discuss new application areas, such as data mining and bioinformatics.
