Using Finite State Machines to decode the human genome
Mr Ewan Birney, The Sanger Centre, Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Cambridge

Abstract: The large scale determination of the complete DNA sequence of a number of organisms has completely changed modern biology. For the first time, computational techniques in handling and extracting information have become crucial to biology. This talk will introduce the field to people who are less familiar with the challenges and give one example of a computational technique designed by the speaker that effectively solves one of the problems.

This seminar was held at the Department of Computer Science, Royal Holloway, University of London on 17 February 1999.
